End of Tenancy Cleaning Checklist for Hertfordshire Tenants

Moving out of a rented home is busy enough without worrying about the final clean. Whether you are leaving a flat in Hemel Hempstead, a family house in St Albans or a shared property in Watford, the condition you leave behind matters. Most tenancy agreements expect the home to be returned as clean as it was when you moved in, allowing for fair wear and tear, and the check-out is usually compared against your check-in inventory.

This room-by-room checklist will help you plan your end of tenancy clean, spot the areas that are easy to miss and decide whether to do it yourself or book professional help.

Before you start

  • Find your check-in inventory and any photos you took when you moved in. They show the standard your landlord or letting agent will compare against.
  • Read the cleaning clause in your tenancy agreement. Some agreements mention specific items, such as carpets or the oven.
  • Clean once the property is empty. It is much quicker to do a thorough job when the furniture and boxes have gone.
  • Gather your supplies: microfibre cloths, a non-scratch scourer, degreaser, limescale remover, glass cleaner, a vacuum with attachments, a mop and bucket, and plenty of rubbish bags.
  • Work from top to bottom and from the back of each room towards the door, so dust falls onto areas you have not cleaned yet.

Kitchen

The kitchen is usually the most closely inspected room, so give it the most time.

  • Oven, hob and grill: remove the racks and trays, degrease the inside and clean the glass door. Don’t forget the extractor hood and its filter.
  • Fridge and freezer: empty them, defrost if needed, and wipe the shelves, drawers and door seals.
  • Cupboards and drawers: empty and wipe inside and out, including handles and the tops of wall units.
  • Worktops, splashbacks and tiles: degrease and pay attention to grout lines.
  • Sink and taps: descale, polish and clear the plughole.
  • Appliances: wipe the washing machine drawer and door seal, the dishwasher filter and the inside of the microwave.
  • Floor: vacuum, then mop, working carefully along the edges and kickboards.

The oven often takes the longest. If you are short on time, oven cleaning can be booked separately as one of our cleaning services.

Bathroom

  • Descale taps, showerheads, shower screens and tiles.
  • Clean the bath, shower tray and basin, including the overflows.
  • Clean the toilet thoroughly, including the base and around the seat hinges.
  • Wipe mirrors, cabinets, shelves and the extractor fan cover.
  • Check grout and sealant for mould and treat any surface marks.
  • Mop the floor last, finishing at the door.

Bedrooms and living areas

  • Dust light fittings, lampshades, curtain rails and the tops of doors and wardrobes.
  • Wipe skirting boards, door frames, light switches and plug sockets.
  • Spot-clean marks on walls where appropriate, testing a small area first.
  • Clean inside wardrobes, drawers and any built-in storage.
  • Clean windows on the inside, along with sills and frames.
  • Vacuum carpets thoroughly, including edges and corners, and wash hard floors.

Easy-to-miss areas

  • Radiators, including behind and between the panels
  • Window tracks and sliding door runners
  • Under beds and sofas in a furnished let
  • The washing machine filter
  • Bins, inside and out
  • Any outside space included in your tenancy, such as a patio, balcony or front step

A final walk-through

Before you hand back the keys, walk through each room with the inventory in hand. Take dated photos of every room, including open cupboards and appliances. Remove all rubbish and personal belongings. If something is beyond cleaning, such as damage, it is best to raise it with your landlord or letting agent directly.

DIY or professional end of tenancy cleaning?

A thorough end of tenancy clean can easily take a full day, often at the same time as packing and moving. Many tenants in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and the surrounding areas choose to book a professional clean so they can focus on the move itself. Remember that the final assessment is always made by your landlord or letting agent, so keep your inventory and photos to hand.

At Just Like Mum Cleaning Agency, end of tenancy cleaning is available for tenants, landlords, property owners and letting agents across Hertfordshire, including Hemel Hempstead, Watford, St Albans, Berkhamsted, Rickmansworth and Kings Langley. 5 Simple Tips for Keeping Your Home Clean and Tidy Every Day ✨🏡

Keeping your home clean doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With a few simple habits, you can maintain a tidy and fresh environment every day without feeling overwhelmed. As a busy mum and the owner of Just Like Mum Cleaning Agency, I know how hard it can be to stay on top of everything. But don’t worry, I’ve got some easy tips to help you keep your home looking its best:

  1. Declutter Regularly 🧹
It’s much easier to clean when there’s less stuff around. Set aside a few minutes every day to declutter your living space. Whether it’s picking up toys, clothes, or stray papers, decluttering makes cleaning more efficient and helps reduce stress.
  2. Set a Cleaning Schedule 📅
Create a daily or weekly schedule to tackle specific tasks. It doesn’t have to be anything complicated. For example, you could vacuum on Mondays, wipe down surfaces on Wednesdays, and tackle the bathroom on Fridays. Spreading out your tasks prevents them from piling up and becoming overwhelming.
  3. Use Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products 🌿
Consider switching to eco-friendly cleaning products that are effective yet gentle on your health and the environment. Many great alternatives to harsh chemicals can still provide a thorough clean, giving you peace of mind while maintaining a sparkling home.
  4. Involve the Family 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
Cleaning doesn’t have to be a solo activity. Get the whole family involved, even the little ones! Make cleaning fun by turning it into a game or giving everyone small, manageable tasks. This way, it becomes less of a chore and more of a team effort.
  5. Take Care of Spills Immediately 🧼
It’s easy to forget about small spills or crumbs, but cleaning them right away will save you time and effort in the long run. Wipe up spills as soon as they happen to prevent stains and buildup.

By adopting these simple habits, you’ll not only keep your home looking clean, but you’ll also create a healthier and more relaxing environment for you and your family. And if you need a little extra help, Just Like Mum Cleaning Agency is always here to give your home the sparkle it deserves. ✨

How to clean and maintain your washing machine

How to Clean and Maintain Your Washing Machine Like a Pro

Your washing machine works hard to keep your clothes fresh and clean, but when was the last time you cleaned it? Over time, detergent residue, limescale, and even mold can build up inside, leading to bad odors and less effective washes. Regular maintenance not only extends the life of your machine but also ensures your laundry stays fresh. Here’s how to do it right!

—

1. Deep Cleaning the Drum

Even though water runs through the drum all the time, it doesn’t mean it stays clean. Bacteria, mold, and detergent buildup can make your washing machine smell bad.

✔ Once a month, run an empty cycle with hot water and white vinegar (or a special washing machine cleaner).
✔ If there’s visible buildup, scrub the drum with a baking soda and water paste.

—

2. Cleaning the Detergent Drawer

Detergent and fabric softener can leave behind sticky residues that attract mold and bacteria.

✔ Remove the drawer and wash it with warm, soapy water.
✔ Use an old toothbrush to scrub off any stubborn residue.
✔ Dry it completely before putting it back.

—

3. Don’t Forget the Door Seal

The rubber seal around the door (especially in front-loading machines) is a breeding ground for mold and mildew.

✔ Wipe it down with a vinegar and water solution after every few washes.
✔ For tough mold spots, use a baking soda paste and scrub gently.
✔ Keep the door slightly open after each wash to let it dry out.

—

4. Cleaning the Filter

The filter collects lint, small objects, and debris. If it’s clogged, your machine may not drain properly.

✔ Check your manual to locate the filter (usually at the bottom front of the machine).
✔ Remove it and rinse it under warm water.
✔ Clean any trapped debris and reinstall it securely.

—

5. Descaling to Remove Limescale

If you live in a hard water area, limescale can build up in your washing machine and affect performance.

✔ Every 2–3 months, run a hot cycle with white vinegar or a descaling agent.
✔ Consider using a water softener to prevent buildup.

—

6. Everyday Maintenance Tips

✔ Use the right amount of detergent—too much causes buildup.
✔ Always remove clothes as soon as the cycle finishes to prevent mildew.
✔ Leave the detergent drawer and door slightly open air flow
