End of Tenancy Cleaning Checklist for Hertfordshire Tenants

Moving out of a rented home is busy enough without worrying about the final clean. Whether you are leaving a flat in Hemel Hempstead, a family house in St Albans or a shared property in Watford, the condition you leave behind matters. Most tenancy agreements expect the home to be returned as clean as it was when you moved in, allowing for fair wear and tear, and the check-out is usually compared against your check-in inventory.

This room-by-room checklist will help you plan your end of tenancy clean, spot the areas that are easy to miss and decide whether to do it yourself or book professional help.

Before you start

  • Find your check-in inventory and any photos you took when you moved in. They show the standard your landlord or letting agent will compare against.
  • Read the cleaning clause in your tenancy agreement. Some agreements mention specific items, such as carpets or the oven.
  • Clean once the property is empty. It is much quicker to do a thorough job when the furniture and boxes have gone.
  • Gather your supplies: microfibre cloths, a non-scratch scourer, degreaser, limescale remover, glass cleaner, a vacuum with attachments, a mop and bucket, and plenty of rubbish bags.
  • Work from top to bottom and from the back of each room towards the door, so dust falls onto areas you have not cleaned yet.

Kitchen

The kitchen is usually the most closely inspected room, so give it the most time.

  • Oven, hob and grill: remove the racks and trays, degrease the inside and clean the glass door. Don’t forget the extractor hood and its filter.
  • Fridge and freezer: empty them, defrost if needed, and wipe the shelves, drawers and door seals.
  • Cupboards and drawers: empty and wipe inside and out, including handles and the tops of wall units.
  • Worktops, splashbacks and tiles: degrease and pay attention to grout lines.
  • Sink and taps: descale, polish and clear the plughole.
  • Appliances: wipe the washing machine drawer and door seal, the dishwasher filter and the inside of the microwave.
  • Floor: vacuum, then mop, working carefully along the edges and kickboards.

The oven often takes the longest. If you are short on time, oven cleaning can be booked separately as one of our cleaning services.

Bathroom

  • Descale taps, showerheads, shower screens and tiles.
  • Clean the bath, shower tray and basin, including the overflows.
  • Clean the toilet thoroughly, including the base and around the seat hinges.
  • Wipe mirrors, cabinets, shelves and the extractor fan cover.
  • Check grout and sealant for mould and treat any surface marks.
  • Mop the floor last, finishing at the door.

Bedrooms and living areas

  • Dust light fittings, lampshades, curtain rails and the tops of doors and wardrobes.
  • Wipe skirting boards, door frames, light switches and plug sockets.
  • Spot-clean marks on walls where appropriate, testing a small area first.
  • Clean inside wardrobes, drawers and any built-in storage.
  • Clean windows on the inside, along with sills and frames.
  • Vacuum carpets thoroughly, including edges and corners, and wash hard floors.

Easy-to-miss areas

  • Radiators, including behind and between the panels
  • Window tracks and sliding door runners
  • Under beds and sofas in a furnished let
  • The washing machine filter
  • Bins, inside and out
  • Any outside space included in your tenancy, such as a patio, balcony or front step

A final walk-through

Before you hand back the keys, walk through each room with the inventory in hand. Take dated photos of every room, including open cupboards and appliances. Remove all rubbish and personal belongings. If something is beyond cleaning, such as damage, it is best to raise it with your landlord or letting agent directly.

DIY or professional end of tenancy cleaning?

A thorough end of tenancy clean can easily take a full day, often at the same time as packing and moving. Many tenants in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and the surrounding areas choose to book a professional clean so they can focus on the move itself. Remember that the final assessment is always made by your landlord or letting agent, so keep your inventory and photos to hand.

At Just Like Mum Cleaning Agency, end of tenancy cleaning is available for tenants, landlords, property owners and letting agents across Hertfordshire, including Hemel Hempstead, Watford, St Albans, Berkhamsted, Rickmansworth and Kings Langley.
